Council approves CEO review process

02 May 2025

At a publicly excluded meeting held on 30 April 2025, Buller District Council approved a proposal to progress the formal performance and remuneration review process for its Chief Executive Officer, Simon Pickford.

Under the terms of the Chief Executive Officer's Individual Employment Agreement (IEA), Council is required to conduct an annual performance and remuneration review. These are standard employment matters and are undertaken with appropriate confidentiality and diligence.

In consultation with the CEO and with agreement from Councillors, the Mayor invited a proposal from Keith Marshall & Louise Buchanan to carry out the 2024/25 CEO performance and remuneration reviews.

Keith Marshall & Louise Buchanan were selected due to their prior experience working with the Council, their understanding of the organisation’s needs, and their ability to deliver a thorough and independent process.

The consultants also provide professional development opportunities for the CEO and feedback to Council. Given the service quality and the proposal's low cost of $11,000, Council resolved not to seek additional quotes.

The work will now proceed over the coming months. The remuneration review will occur between April and June 2025, followed by the performance review between June and August 2025. Both reviews are conducted as separate processes and are expected to conclude by September 2025.
