Contractor appointed for Cobden Street stormwater outfall repair
Buller District Council will soon begin repairs on the collapsing Cobden Street stormwater main, near its outfall to the Buller River at the western end of Cobden Street.
After a competitive open tender process, Ashburton-based Grant Hood Contracting Ltd has been appointed as the successful contractor for this work.
Situated near the stormwater pipe’s outfall to the Buller River, the works are technical in nature and will extend deep underground. They will cover the area approximately 15 metres from the sealed far western end of Cobden Street (beside 2 Cobden Street), through to the riverbank outfall and old wharf structure further west.
Site establishment for the physical works is scheduled to begin on 9 June, with project completion expected within five weeks of this date. Due to the complex nature of the repair, the work schedule is heavily reliant on favourable weather and river conditions.
Specialist materials, including marine-grade concrete pipes have been ordered and are being constructed specifically for this work.
Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “This repair aims to restore normal function to the stormwater services in Cobden Street by relieving and resolving issues currently experienced, such as surface flooding over the road during heavy localised rainfall. The repair’s cost is within the $500,000 budget estimate and is being funded from existing stormwater budgets.”
Several properties at the far western end of Cobden Street will be direct neighbours of the construction works for this repair and residents have been contacted prior to construction.
This is an important repair to help improve the overall management of stormwater in the Cobden Street area and the services provided to the residents connected to it. Council remains committed to improving Cobden Street’s resilience to future weather events.
