Civil Defence springs into action in Northern Buller

14 Mar 2025

Dedicated Civil Defence volunteers from Granity, Ngakawau and Hector recently gathered to help set up an Incident Control Point (ICP) and Civil Defence Centre and learn about the critical processes involved in emergency management.

This hands-on activity, based at the Northern Buller Community Centre and Bathurst Resources’ Ngakawau complex, prepared the group for potential emergency situations.

ICPs serve as a central hub for coordinating responses during incidents. Volunteers were educated about the roles and responsibilities associated with the ICP, including communication protocols and resource management.

The local group currently has 14 volunteers, reflecting a growing commitment within the community to enhance resilience and preparedness. Volunteers' participation is essential, as they will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during emergencies.

The team is optimistic about conducting a full-scale scenario exercise within the next three months. This will provide an opportunity to apply training in a simulated environment and solidify skills and readiness.

Group Manager Regulatory Services Simon Bastion says “It’s fantastic to see the community groups in Buller working together to ensure they are ready for anything that Mother Nature may throw at them. As they say, 80% is in the planning, so it is fantastic to see significant progress being made – well done to all those who participated.”

Together, we can build a resilient community ready to face any challenge.
