Buller District Libraries ‘Summer Reading Road Trip’ gears up
Young people aged 5-18 years living in Buller can sign up for this year’s summer reading program, with registrations opening on Friday 1 December.
This summer’s road trip takes participants on a tour right around our district, taking in the sights and checking them off as they log their reading progress over the month of January – with lots of opportunities to win great prizes along the way.
Come into the Westport or Reefton libraries, sign up and receive a map of Buller to guide you on your reading journey. The program’s road map includes a handy ‘readometer,’ which allows road-trippers to calculate how long they need to read for each day, based on their age.
Community engagement librarian Janelle Hooper says: “We only have 150 spaces available over all of Buller, so we recommend getting in early to avoid missing out. Registrations close at 12 noon on Friday 22 December.”
Readers of all ages and stages are catered for, as they can choose any reading material they like, such as books, magazines, eBooks, audiobooks, comics or graphic novels. They can also be read to and be supported by whānau and caregivers – it all counts.
Participants are challenged to read for 10-20-minutes or more at least four times a week during January, checking in at the library at the end of each week to collect weekly stickers. There are also spot prizes such as swim passes, wristbands, pens, books and more up for grabs.
On completion of the reading journey at the end of January, road trippers will go into the draw to win major prizes, including one of two Chromebooks, and $1,500 worth of $50 Toy World and book vouchers – 30 in total.
Ms Hooper says: “Our summer programs encourage young readers to continue reading over the summer holidays and keep their literacy levels up. We’re excited to be giving away some awesome rewards from our biggest prize pool yet and can’t wait to hear about this summer’s red-hot reads from our tamariki and rangatahi.
In previous years we’ve had lots of younger readers take part, this year we’d like to encourage older readers in their teens to participate too, as there are great prizes for all ages up for grabs. Whānau can get involved too, by helping out with the optional ‘town challenges’ in the reading log.”
The programme is designed to tackle the ‘summer reading slide’ schools often see over the six-week summer break and is funded through a grant from Pub Charity Limited and local Buller contributors. Buller District Libraries acknowledges their support in making this happen. This is the fifth year the library has been successful in securing funding.
