Buller District Council’s Queen Street houses ready for senior housing tenants
Works to prepare Buller District Council’s five Queen Street homes for senior housing tenants have completed, meaning the units are now ready for their new tenants, most of whom are relocating from council’s older Russell Street senior housing flats.
Residents will begin relocating to their new accommodation, allowing them to settle in before winter.
All five homes now have had external ramp and step access installed. One unit has been made fully accessible, with an easy-access bathroom layout and installation of a wet-floor shower.
Three of the Queen Street homes will be occupied by existing tenants who are currently living in the council’s older Russell Street units. Mitre 10 has kindly offering relocation assistance for the Russell Street residents when they are ready to move.
The two remaining vacant Queen Street units will be made available to be tenanted by existing applicants on the senior housing waiting list.
Mayor Jamie Cleine says: “This is a fantastic outcome for our community, significantly improving the quality of housing we provide for our seniors. We’re thrilled to offer these nearly-new units, which will not only enhance the comfort of our residents but also reduce their heating costs — ensuring our seniors enjoy the benefits of safe, modern, and energy-efficient homes.”
Council’s Russell Street section was sold to Mitre 10 in late 2024 and the homes will be demolished once they are vacant. Mitre 10 have agreed all chattels in the homes can be removed by council and repurposed for other senior housing.
