Buller District Council’s dredge Kawatiri kept busy despite quieter times in Westport Harbour
Buller District Council’s dredge Kawatiri is currently undertaking the first tranche of work to complete a dredging project to remove material from the Floating Basin and the Kawatiri berth pocket on the Buller River.
When finished, this work will improve access for the fishing fleet and other marina users and allow the Kawatiri access to its own berth again after a period berthed at Fisherman’s Wharf. The Kawatiri was based at this temporary location while wharf repairs were carried out at the old Holcim Wharf upriver.
Westland Mineral Sands’ initial shipping activities In Westport, commencing with the first load of mineral sand being transported to Nelson in August 2024 by the barge Manahau offered a potential future income stream for the Kawatiri after central government’s flood recovery work was completed in June 2024.
Group Manager Corporate Services Paul Numan says: “Due to the grounding of the Manahau in September 2024, the council has now refocused on investigating alternative future revenue options and its staff are in discussion with other ports around New Zealand who could benefit from the dredging services the Kawatiri can offer.”
“BDC will proceed with putting the Kawatiri on the slipway at Port Nelson in late February 2025 to ensure that the vessel remains in survey and fully compliant with all maritime regulatory requirements” continues Mr Numan.
The council has also ordered a new pump engine to ensure the Kawatiri’s dredging systems continue to be modernised to support future dredging activities.
BDC would like to acknowledge the crew of the Kawatiri, and their commitment and professionalism over the past four years. The dredge crew have significantly improved the condition of the Kawatiri, while completing a substantial number of dredging contracts during this time.
