Solid waste consultation extended
Buller District Council’s consultation on proposed changes to solid waste management will be extended another few days.
Consultation started on the 7th of August and was set to end today at 4.30pm.
The decision has been made to extend that until Thursday 7 September at 4.30pm.
Infrastructure delivery manager Eric de Boer says there has been a significant uptake on the opportunity to submit on the proposed changes.
“A lot of people have chosen to share their feedback online and on paper submission forms, so we have decided to give people more time to have their say.”
Due to the high number of submissions – in the range of 200 to date – we will also look into extending the submission hearings date to allow more time to process the submissions and give people who indicated they wish to speak to their submissions enough notice. This will be advised as soon as possible.
The proposed changes involve switching from rubbish bags to bins and changing how residents pay for their rubbish collection. For the large majority of properties in zone one, the changes would mean:
- A shift from using 60 litre rubbish bags to having a 120 litre wheelie bin provided by Council.
- Mandatory rubbish and recycling collection.
- Changing from weekly to fortnightly collection of rubbish.
- Paying for rubbish and recycling collection through rates (rather than buying rubbish bags).

- Visit Council’s website to make an online submission.
- Consultation documents and submission forms located at Council’s offices and libraries in Westport and Reefton, i-Sites, and resource centers across the district.
