2nd October, 2017

It was announced yesterday that the Torpedo7 Spring Challenge women’s adventure race will be hosted in Westport in 2018.

This event is the vision and creation of 5x Adventure Racing World Champion Nathan Fa’avae and has been held annually since 2007. This year’s event was hosted in Geraldine, and had a record number of 600 teams entered – the largest field in the event’s history.

Each team has three competitors plus a support crew to assist with the transitions between each stage of the event. This event is multi-leg where competitors raft, mountain bike, hike and orienteer themselves through the event that caters to all ages and abilities with a three, six or nine hour race available.

Buller District Council has been working behind the scenes with event organisers to secure this event for Westport 2018 for several months and CEO Andy Gowland-Douglas was present at this year’s event held over the last weekend to observe how the event operates and make the special announcement. “This is an amazing event and it was fantastic to be there, and to see first-hand the positive impact all the visitors were having on the local economy. Geraldine was buzzing, as were all the local retailers and hospitality providers I spoke to. Next year it will be our turn which is very exciting” comments Andy.

“I know we will do a fantastic job of hosting and showcasing our district during next year’s Spring Challenge. Accommodation bookings have already started flooding in and some are already fully booked”.  The event is held in the first weekend of the term three school holidays therefore, next year’s event will be held on 28-29 September 2018. This event usually sells out very fast, so any local ladies wanting to participate should start thinking about forming their teams now.
