Transfer stations
The Westport and Reefton Transfer Stations are facilities where recycling is checked, sorted, compacted, and stored before being sent to processing plants. Smart Environmental operates them.
All recycling needs to be sent outside the district for reprocessing since the Buller District has no recycling facilities. To start this journey, the recycling is collected, sorted, and stored at the transfer stations. Refuse from zone one is collected at the Westport and Reefton Transfer Stations to be transported to the Nelson landfill for final disposal.
