Buller District Council

Media Release-Don’t be too late to have your say about Buller Rates Overhaul

15th December, 2017

Buller District Council is proposing to change the way rates are calculated and wants to hear what ratepayers think about it.

“Submissions close on Monday and we would like to remind all ratepayers of this to give them a last opportunity to put a submission in over the weekend” says Buller District Council CEO Andy Gowland-Douglas.

The proposed changes include using capital value instead of the land value of a property to calculate rates.  And instead of using lots of different amounts in the dollar to calculate rates, the proposal suggests everyone should pay the same rate in the dollar as all other ratepayers in their category.

“The current system of calculating rates does not produce equitable results for similar ratepayers.  To illustrate this, a Charleston commercial ratepayer with land worth $100,000  now will pay general rates of $159, while commercial properties with the same value in Karamea will pay $1,850, Reefton $1,780, Granity $1,095 and Westport $4,144” says Gowland-Douglas.  “This is an extreme example, however similar cases are scattered throughout our current rating system. And I point out that was not a typo, the amount payable is $159”.

Those ratepayers who currently pay a much lesser share than their peers are the most affected and concerned as their rates may increase the most under the rates proposal. It is important that Council hears from as many ratepayers as possible, happy or not, to understand if the proposal should be implemented.

Submissions for the Buller Rates Overhaul close on Monday 18th December at 4.30pm. Submission forms can be collected from Council offices, or can be made online by clicking here or emailed to ratesoverhaul@bdc.govt.nz
