West Coast Regional Media Release – Potential severe windstorm 31 August 2015

31st August, 2015

A deepening low is pushing against a strong ridge of high pressure lying to the south of the South Island. Buller and North Westland will be in a squash zone between the two systems overnight tonight.  The strongest winds are forecast for Nelson, west of about Motueka, Buller and northern Westland from about midnight tonight, where severe gales with damaging gusts of 140 km/h are forecast, although gusts could possibly exceed this about western areas north of Westport.

People are advised winds of this strength could damage structures, power lines, and make driving hazardous. Do not venture outside during the extreme conditions as loose material picked up can become missiles.

West Coast home owners need to secure property today, remove loose material and secure trampolines. Civil Defence also advises residents to have their emergency kits ready, check household food supplies and have torches in case power is lost. The strongest winds will arrive overnight tonight (Monday) and will not begin to ease until tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday).

Civil Defence West Coast has placed its Emergency Operations Centre personnel on standby along with its volunteer Civil Defence teams and will be coordinating any response required with the emergency services and utility organisations.
