Victoria Square turf make over

19th February, 2021

Early next week, work will start to resurface the turf on the Victoria Square sports field.

Local sports organisations and schools have been notified of the work and although some groups have had to reschedule some events, there has been great support and understanding.

Buller District Council’s group manager community services Rachel Townrow says the affected community groups appreciate that the weather has an influence on when this work needs to be done.

“It’s a big job. The contractors will strip existing turf from approximately 16,000m². Then they will lazer grade new soil, sand, and fertiliser mix.  The prepared new surface will then be drill-seeded with a specified sports grass seed blend.”

Once Christchurch contractors Ready Lawn Industries and local contractors WestReef have completed this part of the project, WestReef Services will continue to manage the ‘growing in’ stages.

This will involve tending to field irrigation, fertilisation, pest treatment and mowing. The expected timeline for the field to be available for sports is late June – early July, depending on weather and growing conditions.

The resurfacing work is stage one of a three staged remediation program that has been planned to happen over the next three to four years.

Ms Townrow says stage one will cause the longest period of unavailability of the playing field, due to establishing a completely new grass surface.

“This work is required to rectify existing surface and sub-surface issues in the soil structure and grass turf. The second and third stages of work involve the supply and installation of a new drainage system.

The drainage will be completed in a relatively short timeframe compared to the stage one resurfacing, with minimal downtime to the playing field.”

Ready Lawn Industries has more than 25-years’ experience in specialised sports field construction and recently completed the University Oval in Dunedin, Eden Park in Auckland and are the preferred sport surface contractor for NZ Cricket’s outdoor playing and training facilities at Lincoln University
