State of emergency has been declared for Buller District

1st February, 2018



Mayor Garry Howard declared a state of emergency at 1pm due to the flooding that has occurred as a result of cyclone Fehi.


There have been evacuations in many low lying areas such as Snodgrass, Carters beach , Derby Street and many houses have experienced flooding.


The Emergency Operation Centre has been on standby since yesterday and is now in full swing as a coordination point for welfare, planning, communications and the general emergency operations


The main issue has been the high tide which was at 12.20pm.  The water is now starting to recede in some areas however continues to rise in areas north of Westport.   Evacuated  residents should not return home until notified it is safe to return


Residents are advised to stay off the roads, stay indoors and look after themselves and their neighbours and check the Buller Civil Defence Facebook page for critical updates.

The following roads are closed:

Roads open going north of the Orowaiti – Stephens Road now closed

Crossroads to Punakaiki closed

Murchison to Inangahua closed

Eastons Road Closed

Sea end of Derby Street closed

Roads in and out of Granity & Hector closed
