A local state of emergency was declared for the whole of Buller District at 2.35pm today.
Mayor Cleine said “We know this is a really stressful time for many people and we want to reassure the community there is a strong team at the EOC to guide them through this event”.
People are advised to stay informed through official channels like Buller Emergency Management, MetService, and NZTA who will provide information about road and highway closures.
“Coast FM will also be providing updates. Tuning in to our local radio station is a great way to stay in touch for those who don’t have internet access.”
Members of the public are reminded to prepare getaway bags in preparation for potential evacuations tomorrow.
Mayor Cleine says the safety of people is the main priority and it’s essential to follow all instructions given by authorised personnel.
The EOC has staff ready to take enquiries on 03 789 7999.
