Buller District Council

Reefton swimming pool update

3rd February, 2021

Reefton pool has a new shelter. As part of the building upgrade, the main complex and changing rooms have been seismic strengthened. New internal partitions and doors are being installed in the existing changing rooms, along with new ceilings, electric heaters, and LED lights. Some of the existing bathroom plumbing has also been updated.

The large structural steel portals in the main pool area have been refurbished. They arrived back from the factory late last year and were installed early in the New Year. The new `King Span’ insulated cladding and the gable end `Cool-lite’ cladding is currently being installed. The roof cladding is complete with the side walls and the gable ends expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

New aluminium doors and windows will be supplied and fitted once the cladding is in place.

Electrical pre-wiring is in place for new automatic vents, fans, lights, along with a new distribution supply board. The fit-out of these new electrical fittings (fans, vents, lights, power switches, distribution supply board) is proposed for March.

The existing coal fired boiler will be assessed over the next few months to establish what repairs and maintenance are required. There is not sufficient approved budget to support the removal of this existing coal heating system, or to provide a new cleaner energy heating system. However, Council will pursue options, including Central Government funded opportunities.

There is an opportunity to develop the south west corner of the pool exterior, to landscape an outdoor area that links to the pool interior. This is not covered in the current approved budget, but it could be a suitable revitalisation or other community grant project in the future.
