New floating jetties in council’s hands

22nd September, 2021

Development of new floating jetties for Westport harbour took another step forward last week with management of the new structures handed over from construction firm Bellingham Marine to Buller District Council.

Prior to handover Westport Port’s harbour master Trevor James inspected the jetties and he said he is very impressed with standard of work.

“The workmanship is outstanding. It really shows that Bellingham’s, and the project team, have put a lot of effort into doing a great job.”

Buller District Council chief executive officer Sharon Mason said things are looking sharp at the port.

“At the moment work is focussed on connecting the new floating jetties to land via an access gangway.

“There are still some other finishing touches to be done, including removal of some of the old timber jetties.”

Ms Mason said work will progress over the next month or two and will result in an impressive new facility for commercial and recreational fishing boats.

Funding of $4m for the project came from the Provincial Growth Fund after an application by council.
