Media Release – Update on Reefton Water Supply

6th March, 2020

The precautionary boil water notice remains in place for consumers on the Reefton water supply. Further advice and answers to frequently asked questions regarding the boil water notices are available on Council’s website. This information includes guidance on how long to boil water to ensure safe consumption.

Council’s contractor has completed the preparation and sanitation of the additional secure water tanks. These are the five 30,000 litre tanks located next to the reservoir.  The supply is now running into these additional reservoir tanks.  This allows for the draining of the main reservoir so a full inspection can be carried out.  Once the main reservoir is drained it will be cleaned and disinfected.

Ongoing testing is being carried out within the water supply network.  These results have been clear.  Council continues to collaborate with the Canterbury District Health Board (DHB), and is awaiting advice from the DHB whether it is necessary to keep the precautionary boil water notice in place.

Council is working with best practice industry advice on planning the improvements to both the infrastructure layout and potential changes in treatment processes.  This is to ensure the best medium and long-term performance for the supply.  Council is committed to ensuring regulatory compliance is achieved and to provide clean, safe and reliable drinking water.

Council appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the Reefton community during this time.
