Media Release- Switching on the Lights

27th November, 2019

Thanks to the sponsorship obtained by former Mayor Garry Howard, Christmas lights will be installed on and around the Clocktower in Westport this festive season.

Sponsorship has been generously donated from Nikau Group, Hadlee and Brunton and Westport Mitre 10 to purchase the festive lights. Buller Electricity have generously sponsored their services to install the lights along with some assistance from some Council staff.

John Stil Senior Chief Executive/Director from Nikau Group said, “My wife Diana, our family and myself love to support local worthwhile causes wherever we work and supporting Council with Christmas lights is definitely one of those causes. We love the community on the coast, they are just so determined to overcome many obstacles as everyone knows, and they are still positive and smiling, doing their very best every day. We wish them well.”

David Brunton from Hadlee and Brunton said, “Hadlee and Brunton are proud to help fund Westport’s new Christmas lights and would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all the amazing local people and businesses that have been carrying us through this year.  Without the huge support effort from the community we would not have been able to be in a position to deliver this extremely challenging project.  It has truly been a pleasure working in the town and the team has thoroughly enjoyed our time here.  We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas.”

“We are very appreciative of the support from our sponsors. Christmas time is a great opportunity for families and friends to gather in the Buller district and to be able to welcome them with a festive Christmas light display is exciting “said Mayor Jamie Cleine.

The community is invited to attend a small event that will be held at the Clocktower on Friday 29 November, with the lights being turned on at 9pm. The Westport Municipal Band will be at the Clocktower playing from 8pm.

The Council plans to seek more support from donors in the future so that the light installations will increase every year.
