Media Release-Representation Review Will Seek Community View on Paparoa Ward

20th July, 2018

Buller District Council will ask the community for feedback on the proposal for a new “Paparoa Ward” which would encompass the area south of the Buller River. The proposed ward would exclude the township and nearby environs of Carters Beach, those areas would remain with the Westport Ward.   The new ward would have one representative and the Westport Ward would reduce from six to five.

Councillors resolved to undertake community consultation on this issue at the Council Meeting on 18 July 2018.  The debate highlighted two important aspects to consider.   If a Papaora Ward was established this may provide better representation for constituents further down the coast and in areas such as Punakaiki, however those constituents in the northern part of the ward who reside nearby to Westport could no longer vote for up to six representatives instead having a single dedicated representative.  Therefore it is important Council receives submissions on the proposal, to ensure there is fair and effective representation for individuals and communities, and Council is very committed to achieving this.

A further media release will follow to alert our community when consultation opens on the proposal.
