Media Release – Privacy Act changes and what it will mean for you

27th November, 2020

Customers may notice some changes at Buller District Council offices from 1 December when the Privacy Act 2020 comes into force.

To comply with the new legislation, council may now request identification from customers to verify their identity before providing personal information.

“The changes to our process have been made to ensure we are protecting people’s privacy and complying with the new legislative requirements”, says council’s group manager community services Rachel Townrow. “Our aim is to keep your personal information safe, so please do not be offended if staff ask for identification when providing services that involve disclosing information about you”.

The Act introduces stronger privacy protections for individuals and greater obligations for businesses. It applies to almost every person, business and organisation in New Zealand.
