Media Release – Inangahua Community Board by-election

28th October, 2020

Council staff are organising a by-election for a community board member in the Inangahua Ward. Nominations for the role open on Tuesday 24 November and close Tuesday 22 December.

Mayor Jamie Cleine said the vacancy created by Rachel Fifield’s resignation will be for a term of 20 months when the next local government elections will happen in October 2022.

“The Electoral Act requires Council to call for nominations and go through an official process to fill the role.”

The election will operate on a first past the post system. Voting papers will be posted to all persons registered in the Inangahua Ward late January. With postal voting set to close on Wednesday 17 February and a declaration of the result announced on 19 February.

Mayor Cleine described Rachel’s contribution to the community as proactive and energetic.

“I have thanked Rachel for her time, energy, and commitment to the Inangahua community. She has been a very accessible and engaged member of the community board.”

Ms Fifield has been employed by Council since last December on a fixed-term contract as Reefton’s Socio Economic Development Officer (SEDO) which is funded by OceanaGold. She says this is her priority.

“I am resigning to focus on my SEDO role where I feel I can be most effective in achieving positive outcomes for the Reefton community, which I am passionate about,” Ms Fifield said.
