Buller District Council

Media Release – Dredge heads out for work

17th February, 2020

The Buller District Council’s dredger Kawatiri and her six crew are sailing to Nelson this week on their way to dredge for the Port of Oamaru.
The Waitaki District Council contracted Kawatiri last year to remove 25,000 cubic metres from Port Oamaru during March 2020.
Westport Port Manager Jackie Mathers said Council was taking the opportunity to slip the Kawatiri in Nelson for maintenance before commencing the job in Oamaru. “We’ve done two reasonably large jobs in the last six months so we’re going to spend some money on maintenance” she said. “Slipping the vessel means we can get to areas of the ship not normally accessible when she’s in the water.”
The Oamaru work is stage two of a dredging campaign to clear the port of a build-up of sediment. Stage one of the $500,000 project began in late 2018, when excavators dug a three metre deep channel at the harbour entrance.
Ms Mathers said Kawatiri is expected to arrive in Oamaru in the first week of March and the work required would take about three weeks to complete dependant on weather conditions.
The Buller District Council has secured five contracts for the dredge since taking over operations in April 2018.
