Last Tuesday (15 June) Buller District Council staff were called to a dog attacking stock, subsequently the dog was impounded. Due to the aggressive behaviour of the dog, a veterinarian was engaged to euthanise the animal.
The usual euthanasia procedures were not possible, and safety of personnel became a significant risk. As a result, the dog was shot.
It is not Council policy or practice to shoot dogs.
This was an extraordinary event and a very difficult situation for all involved.
