Local Volunteer Fire Fighters Call For

13th January, 2016

Local volunteer fire fighters throughout the district have been busy over the holiday period keeping us safe, putting out fires. However the majority of these call outs could have been avoided as the fires were caused by deliberate acts of arson.

Last Tuesday another tyre was set alight around North Beach causing a vegetation fire, our volunteers spent almost two hours getting the fire under control. In December a pile of tyres was set on fire at Mt Rochfort.  This required the mobilization of the Rural Fire Officers as well as Westport, Granity, Waimangaroa Fire Brigades and the Police. The tyres and rubbish were found burning in front of the Kordia building and it was confirmed the fire had been deliberately lit.

“The volunteers, their families who support them and their employers make a considerable effort in order for the fire brigades to operate throughout the year but especially during the holidays. We urge the community to help us by notifying authorities of any suspicious activity and to report any information that can help us to prosecute arsonists and charge them for the costs incurred. Time is precious and we wish to avoid using volunteer’s valuable time on unnecessary call outs. We would appreciate local people being vigilant to keep our communities safe” comments Compliance & Emergency Team Leader, Atila de Oliveria.
