Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ)

The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) is a nationwide network of New Zealand’s Mayors and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) working together towards the vision of all young people under 25 being engaged in appropriate education, training, work, or other positive activity in their communities.

Key information

MTFJ has partnered with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and developed the Community Resilience Programme which provides up to $500,000 to 23 rural councils (including Buller District Council) with a national aim to get 1,450 young people engaged in a sustainable employment pathway.

The focus is rural, as young people in rural New Zealand often face exacerbated challenges when entering into the labour force, these challenges include a lack of access to skill development pathways, driver licensing and testing facilities and a lack of access to employers.

The partnership is targeted toward supporting young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET).

Julie Moore is Buller District’s MTFJ coordinator. Julie is part of the team based at Buller REAP in Westport.

Julie matches NEET job seekers (NEET’s to include disabled young people and anybody disadvantaged in the labour market and not able to readily access MSD services) with training, and or jobs.

Through MTFJ Julie can allocate wage subsidies, money for tools, and training. Each job seeker’s situation is unique, so Julie uses a tailored approach to suit each situation.

The funding is flexible, which means that an individualised and local-based approach is taken when supporting job seekers into work.

The council through MTFJ can provide a wage subsidy for the employer to take on a young person, cover the costs of training (including driver licensing), tool/boot subsidies and other incentives.

All councils are working closely with the Ministry of Social Development, to ensure that there is no duplication of services or resources.

MTFJ is working with Buller District Council to encourage young adults to think rural when it comes to work and lifestyle options.

Think Rural is a nationwide initiative, with eighteen rural districts signed up. The goal is to contribute towards filling 1,150 jobs in rural areas with young people wanting to experience a new way of life.

The campaign is driven by Local Government New Zealand’s (LGNZ) Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ), with support from the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).
