Buller District Council

Council approves port lease

1st July, 2021

In July 2020, Council approved a two-year lease with West Coast Bulk Logistics (WCBL) to enable commercial activity on Council-owned land at the Westport Port.

At its meeting yesterday (Wednesday 30 June) Buller District Council resolved to extend the lease with WCBL for 30-years.

WCBL plans to establish a bulk precinct on the land for the shipping of bulk commodities through the port.

Council noted that WCBL has made provision to make significant capital investment into areas of the port that are not covered by the Provincial Growth Fund upgrade work that is underway.

Mayor Jamie Cleine says the arrangement fits with the 2021 – 2031 Long Term Plan that Council adopted at the same meeting.

“The Long Term Plan states Council is seeking to diversify its income streams and this agreement will generate income for the port which is being ring-fenced outside of Council.

“It also fits with Council’s goal of developing Buller’s strategic assets, including consideration of charges and developing strategy to leverage private business.”

Due to the commercially sensitive information that was discussed, public were excluded from this part of the meeting.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the lease.

Review dates are built into the lease to ensure the land market value is reviewed at year four.

Council is conscious of its regulatory functions and obligations and all relevant resource consent applications related to WCBL will be handled in line with the Resource Management Act requirements.
