Buller District Council

Council and Sounds Air future focused

18th December, 2020

In a public excluded part of Wednesday’s Council’s meeting a report prepared by airport manager Kim Campbell showed a willingness by Sounds Air and Council to establish a path forward when the contract between them expires in April 2021.

The current contract sees council provide an underwrite to Sounds Air if necessary, to keep the only commercial flight service that operates out of Westport airport going. The contract was originally designed six years’ ago to enable the then fledgling service to be established.

Council considers the flight service to be key to facilitating economic growth and community

The report was reviewed with the public excluded due to the commercially sensitive nature of Sounds Air business information.

At the meeting, Councillor’s agreed to work closely with Sounds Air to establish a conditions of use agreement for the Westport Airport between council and the airline.
