Buller District Council

Car parking courtesy encouraged

13th April, 2021

Buller’s economy is faring well, and council is encouraging shoppers and people who work in businesses on the main street to be considerate to help keep it that way.

Group manager regulatory services Sean Judd says council has received some complaints from business owners who are unhappy about people parking for long periods of time on Palmerston Street.

“The retailers we’ve heard from want people to use the side streets or the centrally located car park on the corner of Lyndhurst and Russell for long term parking.

It’s good for business if the car parks turn over throughout the day.”

Council does have the authority to enforce parking related breaches and issue infringement notices, however, Mr Judd says it would rather adopt an educational approach and seeks the community’s cooperation.

“Appointing a parking warden is not a route Council wishes to head down but would reconsider if it felt it was necessary.”

Council will continue to monitor the current situation.

The message is clear – be considerate towards shop keepers and shoppers and enjoy a short stroll into the CBD from a side street if you need to park up for long.
