Media Release- Westport Water Supply Moves Forward

16th February, 2018

Council has accepted recommendations to proceed with the due diligence phase of the Westport water project. This a major step forward in resolving the primary raw water supply which has been out of service since the No.1 Tunnel collapse in December 2016.

After completing a rigorous “Price Quality Method” tender process, Council’s bid evaluation team will now proceed with technical, planning and access clarifications identified in the risk assessment.

Group Manager Assets & Infrastructure Mike Duff says “Fix the Water is our promise to the community and it is critical that we get this decision right. It is the most important asset in Westport”.

The best option must prove beyond doubt that safe, adequate and reliable drinking water will be provided in the most affordable way for ratepayers of today, and for future generations to come.

Mike Duff says “Now that we have the green light to conduct pre-award due diligence and detailed contract negotiations, we will move quickly to ensure that project delivery is set up for success”.

The project budget which was approved in the 2017/18 Annual Plan has also been accepted by Council. Project completion is expected before the end of this year.
