Buller District Council

Media Release- Consultation for Proposed Paparoa Ward Opens

31st July, 2018

Buller District Council opens consultation today on the proposal for a new “Paparoa Ward”. The proposed ward would encompass the area south of the Buller River but exclude the township and nearby surrounds of Carters Beach. Carters Beach area would remain within the Westport Ward.   The new ward would have one councillor, and the Westport Ward would reduce from six councillors to five.

If a Papaora Ward is established then this may provide better representation for constituents further down the coast and in areas such as Punakaiki. On the other hand those constituents in the northern area of the ward who live close to Westport would no longer be able to vote for up to six councillors. Instead they would vote for one.

Council is very committed to achieving fair and effective representation for its people and our communities, so it is important Council receives submissions on the proposal to ensure community views are heard.

Consultation opens today, and ends at 4.30pm on Friday 31st August.  A Statement of Proposal providing further details and a submission form can be picked up from Council offices at Reefton and Westport, or found online at www.bullerdc.govt.nz/representation-review
