26th October, 2018

At its Council meeting next week, the Buller District Council will consider how best to further extend their working relationship with iwi.

Mayor Garry Howard said that iwi are such an important part of every aspect of the future of the district and it was crucial that Council had a close working relationship. “It’s not like we don’t already have a good interaction at a number of levels. I meet regularly with iwi on a formal basis with the other Mayors, as do all the council Chief Executives. What we are considering next week is how we can extend the relationship even further. I’m conscious that Westland and other Councils have moved on leaps and bounds compared to us, and it’s very important that we recognise the importance of iwi to the Buller too.”

Francois Tumahai, Chairman, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae echoed those sentiments. “The time has come for us to see how we can work closer together on issues that are important for the Buller. As mana whenua, Ngāti Waewae are committed to building a future partnership alongside Council.”
