Buller District Council

Important update for residents in recovery phase

2nd February, 2018

Although a state of emergency still remains in place, the emergency response effort has moved now to that of recovery.  We currently have teams out assessing damage and looking to reinstate anything they can.    Residents should not re-inhabit flooded homes until they have been checked for structural damage and until it has been confirmed that there is no contamination from sewage which is a risk to health, and no risk of electrocution from the power supply. Resident’s welfare remains our primary concern.

The key information for residents is as per below:

  1. Power supply

Treat all lines as live at all times, even if power is off.  Never walk in water where there is any chance of wiring failure.  Buller Electricity Staff are out in various areas where power is out checking the LV Distribution Boxes to see if they can safely liven them again.  They will also be working in the other affected areas throughout today.

  1. Property Damage

Teams of inspectors are already out inspecting known affected areas. If you have not already seen an inspector and your property has been damage please contact council on:  03 788 9111.   Staff will provide you with information and arrange for a building inspector to come out and inspect if required.  Please do not use this line for welfare related calls – call the EOC as per below.

  1. Welfare & Evacuations

If you have had to evacuate your property or have any welfare concerns please call the EOC on 03 789 7999 to register your details.  This allows us to note any assistance required and pass on to the relevant agencies.   You can also go to the NBS Theatre in person to register details and seek assistance, or to the Fire Station if in Granity.

  1. Crime related concerns

Please ring 111 if there are any concerns about property theft or any other police matter – do not ring the local police stations or the EOC.

  1. Water supply

The Westport Town supply has not been affected by this event and is safe to drink as normal
